Our Song Is More Than A Pretty Tune

When you try your best, but you don’t succeed

When you get what you want, but not what you need

When you feel so tired, but you can’t sleep

Stuck in reverse

And the tears come streaming down on your face

When you lose something you can’t replace

When you love someone, but it goes to waste

Could it be worse?

Chorus: (Lights will guide you home

And ignite your bones

And I will try to fix you)

And high up above or down below

When you’re too in love to let it go

If you never try you’ll never know

Just what you’re worth

Chorus

Tears stream down on your face

When you lose something you cannot replace

Tears stream down on your face

And I…

Tears stream down on your face

I promise you I will learn from my mistakes

Tears stream down your face

And I…

Lights will guide you home

And ignite your bones

And I will try to fix you

Don’t tell!).  I think the song touched us on a few levels. Firstly, it’s a beautiful song.  Secondly, the lyrics spoke to the part of us that had been damaged by past relationships and was raw and shielding itself from additional pain.  Fortunately, we both took one more chance at love and were rewarded by finding our soulmate.  Thirdly, there is the promise to mend all those broken bits and heal them with love, determination, and steadfastness.  My husband has healed whatever holes I had in my heart and self-esteem by his unwavering love, support, and encouragement.  This is my interpretation of my favorite lines in the song, the chorus:

Lights will guide you home

And ignite your bones

And I will try to fix you

Together, we are at home

Together, we grow whole

Together, we are complete

It’s inevitable that we will mess up in our relationship, but because our love for each other is so strong, we will work through it and–as the song says–learn from our mistakes.  And I think that’s all you can do.

If you have a couple’s song, I’d love to hear what it is and the story behind it!
